Portsmouth’s Springfield School has a fresh, cutting-edge facility for the next generation of scientists and engineers. APMG has designed, manufactured and installed the innovative lab furniture for its £2.6M science block project.
The state of the art, dedicated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teaching rooms and science laboratories feature some ingenious APMG furniture designs.
APMG’s talented design team has added some creative elements to these bright, new, hard-wearing school labs and STEM teaching rooms.
The APMG team has a range of benching options available. The nine science labs at Springfield School have perimeter benching and winged island benches. The winged design maximises space and focuses students’ attention on the teaching zone.
In these labs, the electrical and gas services are located at the front of each bench. A worktop cut-out conveniently and safely routes the connections to the equipment. As a result, the worktops present a clear, clutter-free surface. They easily accommodate experiments, apparatus and books. And as a bonus, with the services neatly out of reach, there’s no opportunity for students to mess about with them either.

The APMG team delivers practical, functional, inspiring classrooms for learning and teaching. The tough Design Technology furniture for the two STEM teaching rooms features two octagonal connected island benches. These give students individual workspaces where they can still interact with peers and teachers.
In addition, there is plenty of under bench storage for equipment.
The worktops are resilient Trespa® TopLab®BASE. This material is impact, scratch and wear-resistant – ideal for withstanding the tough treatment expected in this environment.
The two science lab prep rooms have been designed with workflow and storage in mind. They have an island and perimeter benching and racking for trays. In line with CLEAPSS G9 guidance, both prep rooms have a fume cupboard to keep the Science Techs safe and protected.
Following the completion of the facility Sara Spivey, Head Teacher at Springfield School said:
‘As a former science teacher myself, I know the positive difference that a well-designed laboratory space supported by up to date IT and technological equipment makes to pupils’ learning experience.
‘We aim to provide a relevant academic curriculum which supports students to become responsible citizens, equipped for the technological society in which they will live. These tough, well-resourced new labs, DT rooms and prep rooms will help us achieve this.
‘The facilities that Springfield now has in place for the teaching of science and technology are quite honestly the best that I have seen in a secondary school.
‘The APMG fitted furniture in the labs and prep rooms is of the highest quality and has clever design tweaks to support both learning and teaching. The staff are thrilled with the layout, the furniture and the finish.
‘Our students deserve the best, and that’s what everyone involved in the project has worked to achieve for them. It has been a joy hearing the students’ positive comments and we look forward to them enjoying the facilities for many years to come.’
